JAWS GOLF AND XMAS DINNER ON THURSDAY

5TH DECEMBER AT

BURNHAM BEECHES GOLF CLUB.

The last game of the year was played at Burnham Beeches Golf Club on Thursday 5th December.

Due to frosty conditions, all greens were temporary but this did not put off the 14 players who produced some really good scores.

Unfortunately, Krysia Edwards and John Jewson were unable to play due to injury and illness but both joined us for coffee before play commenced. Krysia collected all the money for me, many thanks for your help Krysia.

4 Players had No Blob rounds, Colin Willes, Phil Cox, Ian Mcdougle and Ian Griffith. The trophy went to Ian Mcdougle for the highest score (21 points) on the back 9.

Ian also won the Squeaky Toy trophy for failing to stop Roy Jackson’s trolley which apparently was completely out of control.

Mary Holmes achieved the highest ladies score with 32 points and won nearest the pin in two shots on the 17th hole. Well done, Mary.

Phil Cox won the longest drive on the 11th hole, I’m told it was a mighty hit.

The star of the day was Lee Chapman who scored 37 points and won the Jaws Trophy. He was also presented with the “Player of the Year” trophy.

Well done Lee but watch out for the big cut in handicap which is on its way!!

The individual scores were as follows:

In the evening, 31 people enjoyed a very good evening with excellent food. We were sorry that Janet Letchford and Derek and Pauline Hussey were unable to join us, but we were all very pleased that Elisabeth Bright was able to join us as our guest.

Andy Stone will be in touch with you shortly asking for volunteers to organise the matches for next year and to notify you of your handicaps for next year!!

JAWS GOLF – WEDNESDAY 6th NOVEMBER

HENNERTON GOLF CLUB

Twelve hardy souls took up the challenge to conquer the Hennerton course in what, surprisingly, was very clement weather. Unfortunately, as a result of a buggy ban George was not able to join us.

Despite wet conditions underfoot the scoring was very respectable with six players scoring 33 or more points. It was such an easy stroll for the winner as after 11 holes he had amassed 30 points. As he is not one to embarrass his golfing friends he decided to ease-up and only scored seven points from the remaining 6 holes, just enough to win without humiliating the rest of us. Job well done Brian.

Mary and Ian demonstrated their skills by accumulating 36 points  - well done.  Surprisingly no one was able to hit the 9th green in one to claim the prize for nearest the pin (par 3).

Colin Willes was awarded the squeaky toy for winding up his playing companions by pretending his trolley had run off on its own!!

I felt that everyone enjoyed themselves which is the main objective.

Over to you Andy to adjust the handicaps and Ian for the Xmas bash at Burnham Beeches on Thursday, 5th December.

The individual scores were:-

Player                                 H/cap     Points

Brian Letchford                    36              37

JAWS GOLF – WEDNESDAY 2ND OCTOBER

HUNTSWOOD GOLF CLUB

7 JAWS golfers enjoyed wonderful October sunshine at Huntswood on Wednesday 2 October - and the quality of the golf matched the conditions. The course played pretty well, although the greens were somewhat slow and I think caught everyone out to start with. But Huntswood looked after everyone well, and I think will be a return venue.

The prize winners are :

Roy Jackson (24)     - 43 points - great score, especially as 2 blobs and just 2 points after 3 holes ! What a fight back.

George Holmes (32) - 40 points - and no blobs ! Excellent consistency, and expertly chauffeured by Sid. George is the proud custodian of the No Blob trophy.

Lee Chapman (27)   - 34 points - stormed through on back 9 for 20 points, to get 3rd place on countback

Phil Cox (13)            - 34 points - the good, the bad, and the ugly - situation normal !

Andy Stone (11)     - 31 points - consistent throughout, but very tough off an 11 handicap

May Holmes (28)     - 28 points - drove the ball like a goddess - close to some great scoring

Mike Halder (26)     - 28 points - sportingly accepted the wooden spoon on countback !

The longest drive men - was won by Andy Stone (yes, again!), and the longest drive -ladies - was won by Mary Holmes.

We all decided to miss the 2nd green with our tee shots, so the nearest to the pin was a “pass.”

The Squeaky Toy was won by George (yes, a multiple winner on the day) for losing his banana, only to find it squashed on the path (was this Sid’s doing driving the buggy ?) - George claims he did not scrape it up and eat it, but we’re not so sure.

JAWS GOLF –WEDNESDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER

HAZLEMERE GOLF CLUB

Ten of us braved the very windy but sunny conditions in the heart of the Chiltern Hills for the September monthly Golf meeting.

The Clubhouse had undergone a complete refurbishment since we were last here and very nice it looked to. For some of us we even took advantage of the Car cleaning Company situated in the large car park!!!

The course was extremely challenging (Hilly to say the least!!) but, we had breathtaking views and altogether it was a most enjoyable experience.

The scores reflected a tough course and, for a few of us, a first experience at Hazlemere. We shall return !!

As Krisha was the only lady member present we had to forgo the usual Ladies prizes but well done Krisha for coping with the chaps!!!

JAWS ANNUAL GOLF -  SATURDAY AUGUST 3rd 2019

Results of the JAWS annual Golf Tournament 3rd August 2019,

THE SOUTH BUCKINGHAMSHIRE

15 players (4 Ladies and 11 Gentlemen), which worked out as five teams of 3, competed in the tournament at The South Buckinghamshire (AKA Farnham Park) on Saturday 3rd August..

The weather was warm and partially sunny. The golf course fairways were dry and hard with a lack of grass, as a partial hangover from last year’s drought, giving some rather unfortunate bounces.

In order to vary the format a bit the Team game this year was straight forward all scores count. Unlike last year this did speed up the team totals although for some did not speed up their golf!!

Particular Thanks to Ian and Val Griffith for hosting the post match barbecue and to Val for her food organisation too.. Special thanks also to all the helpers for providing tables and chairs and for setting up and clearing up later and on Sunday. As always the salads and desserts brought to be shared by everyone were delicious. We all had a superb dinner, with special thanks for the cooking efforts of Ian Griffith and Derek Hussey who after a traumatic Friday and Saturday and.then hosted the JAWS Breakfast with Pauline on the Sunday!!

The following received magnificent bottles of wine and Prosecco for their efforts, with the winners also getting trophies. Well done to Tony Nester and Krysia Edwards (agai!!) on their excellent performances in winning 2 prizes - despite my best efforts to limit anyone to a single prize. There will need to be further handicap adjustments and another change to the team competition to avoid this next year – I hope!!

George Holmes, Krysia Edwards and Tony Nester

In the competition for the Gentlemen's trophy Tony Nester won with a convincing 35point and Collin Willes was second with 34 points on countback from Ian Griffith.

Krysia won the Ladies trophy with 35 points (having nearly withdrawn due to injury!! Beware of the injured golfer!!!). Bente Gregory came second with 31 points..

Not surprisingly the Team Award was won by George Holmes, Krysia Edwards and Tony Nester with 103 points, outstripping the next best team of Ian Griffith, Janet McDougle and Colin Willes by 8 points.

There was only one NOBLOB round by Ian Griffith. So he wins the Trophy once we find out where it is!!

The squeaky toy was won by Colin who unfortunately decided to get a closer look at Ian’s fish than intended. Having emerged drenched and cut and bruised he went home got changed and returned to an ovation!! The trophy and a compensatory(?) bottle of wine was awarded.

Honest Ron as always gave us an amusing account of how the betting had gone, and behind his impassive exterior it appears that he didn’t have a good day and threatened to never do it again!!??

Derek and Pauline Hussey have very kindly offered to host the BBQ next year 2020 which coincidentally is an Olympic Year and you may recall it was Super-Saturday in 2012 was when Derek and Pauline hosted last time!! It is proposed that the event will be held on a Wednesday now so please put aside Wednesday 5th August for the 2020 Summer Golf and Barbecue.

There was an expected loss of £34.60.

The kitty now stands at an available £128.30

JAWS GOLF – WEDNESDAY 3RD JULY 2019

OAKLAND PARK GOLF CLUB

Eleven golfers participated at OPGC on a beautiful day at the novel time of 11.38 am for the first tee-off. Scores were high (as predicted by the organiser) and the winner was Janet Crookes with a superb score of 44 points.  Mary Holmes followed her home with 39 points and the best of the rest (all men) was Roy Jackson with 37 points.

Janet won the ladies longest drive whilst Roy dominated the men’s nearest the pin and the nearest the pin in 2 on the 15th hole.  Well done to both of them.  The rest of us amused ourselves by admiring the freshly cut grass, feeding the ducks etc.  No golfer managed to score on every  hole so the NoBlob trophy goes back into the cupboard for another month.

The  squeaky toy was handed to Tony Nester for nearly hitting 3 non-involved other golfers when escaping from a bunker with a mighty shot.

George had to fight Tony hard for the Wooden Spoon but his superior technique of slicing balls into nearby, unsuspecting, bunkers ensured his talents were recognised in the end.

Next time out it is the Annual Tournament at the South Bucks Golf Club (Farnham Park to you and me) and Andy would very much like to hear that as many people as possible will be playing.

Best wishes to all

George

LONGEST DRIVE, LADIES :  Equality reigns ! ….. they couldn't either

NEAREST THE PIN , MEN  :

Ian McDougle     ( despite having my name crossed off the marker and replaced by the name " RON " )

JAWS GOLF – WEDNESDAY 1st MAY 2019–

RICHINGS PARK GOLF CLUB

Having watched the weather forecast with some trepidation for several days it was a blessed relief that our prayers were answered and we were rewarded with a warm sunny day for our May golf.

On the day it was a very close contest with four or five members being in with a shout. However despite having a blob on the first hole, the trophy winner with 35 points was Lee Chapman. Congratulations Lee!

The Nearest the Pin competition was won by Phil Crookes who duly completed his par.

Since we only had one lady in the group, the Longest Drive competition was declared an open event to include Krysia who had a small but fair advantage of the ladies’ tee. Andy Stone won it (no surprise there) but Krysia came close. Well done!  After some discussion it was agreed that, for the June competition, we would have a “second shot nearest the pin” prize as a change from the Longest Drive. Then all of us might have a chance of winning.

The Wooden Spoon went to our new member, Neil Frew,  whose allocated handicap proved a little too challenging.

Andy Stone won the no-blob trophy, not for the first time.

Finally there was some debate about the Squeaky Toy award. Andy and I had managed to get the handicaps wrong initially and were prepared to eat humble pie and take the award. However, due to horrendous traffic jams, my driver Roy (Michael Schumacher) Jackson and I were delayed and arrived a little later than anticipated. Roy kindly agreed therefore to take the hit and now holds the Squeaky Toy for a month. Thank you Roy.

Formal results are shown below.

JAWS GOLF – WEDNESDAY 3RD APRIL 2019– TEMPLE GOLF CLUB

The early morning fog cleared leaving a lovely sunny day, sandwiched between two wet ones, for our outing to Temple Golf Club.

Twelve Jaws members braved the morning rush hour traffic with George and Mary arriving just in time following an unusual route choice from George, which earned him a squeaky toy nomination. It was great to also have Sid Hooper join us, acting as Barrie's buggy chauffer. The stresses of being off first obviously got to the first group with Roy leaving his driver in the car (another squeaky toy nomination) and then both Phil and Mary hitting wild drives into the trees from the first tee!

Luckily the day improved from there with the sun coming out between clouds and a quiet and well maintained Temple course being a joy to play on (for some at least!). Phil Crookes exploited his (unfair?) home advantage by coming first with 34 stableford points (despite three blobs!). Krysia Edwards played very well, winning both the ladies longest drive on hole 12 and nearest the pin in two on the last hole! Roy Jackson, playing his first game this year, won the mens longest drive – although he did admit to having a driving lesson just before the game! After much debate, Colin Willes was awarded the squeaky toy for hitting Sid and Barrie's buggy with his ball. Barrie won the wooden spoon and was also awarded the no blob trophy, renamed the nine blob trophy, to mark his specatacular acheivement of not scoring on half the holes!

Thanks to all for coming along.

JAWS GOLF – WEDNESDAY 6TH MARCH 2019 – WYCOMBE HEIGHTS

Well, lets start with a huge thanks to the Magnificent Seven who turned up despite a relatively poor weather forecast. Although we did get wet (in fact quite wet) later on, we stayed dry until the 12th so it could have been worse.

The course was in reasonably good condition, but obviously the rain did affect the performance of some later on as umbrellas were wrecked, hats were lost, and club grips and gloves got too wet. Funnily enough we can’t blame the rain for the fact no one got Nearest the Pin as that was on the 8th before it started raining!

Tony didn’t let the rain affect his play much, and didn’t seem to be suffering from too much jet lag – either that or we should all play two days after travelling half way across the globe. Janet was suffering from organiser’s stress, or maybe just poor golf, and thought she would be protecting the gallant few from the Wooden Spoon but in the end the conditions got the better of Krysia and she has taken the Bollinger Box home.

There was a variation to the Longest Drive competition in that we split the group into High Handicap and Low Handicap to give the Ladies a chance, but not too much of a chance. As it happened, none of the Low Handicappers found the fairway, and Janet won the prize for the High Handicappers group.

Tony also won the No Blob Trophy after Colin decided to adopt handicap management techniques on the back nine and gave up his claim. However, it should be noted that Tony may be in line for a club reprimand as he has admitted to not displaying these much sought-after trophies at home (who would believe it!).

That leaves us with the Squeaky Toy…there were a few insubstantial nominations for minor misdemeanours but it was the unanimous view of those present that the Trophy should be awarded to Brian Letchford (in his absence) for both not returning it and also because it seems it also has not been on display (shame!)

So, the results:

Name                          H’cap  Score  Comment

Tony Nester                19        34        Worthy winner
Colin Willes                 29        29        Was going well until the 11th
Phil Crookes                16        26        on count back
Derek Hussey             29        26        came good in the end
Janet Crookes             33        19        what can I say?
Ian McDougle              31        18        at least he turned up and stayed the course!
Krysia Edwards           35        17        just missed out on several holes

No Blob                                   Tony Nester
Longest Drive (2nd div)            Janet Crookes
Longest Drive (1st div)             not awarded
Nearest the Pin                       not awarded
Squeaky Toy                           Brian Letchford (in absentia)

Andy will update the handicaps on his return from holiday and the kitty broke even today.

JAWS GOLF – WEDNESDAY 6TH FEBRUARY 2019 – WINTER HILL GOLF CLUB – COOKHAM

The snow, ice and rain of previous days, had meant that most Golf Clubs in the area had been closed or play seriously restricted in the days before the first JAWS Golf outing of 2019 planned for Winter Hill in Cookham.

However after many, many pleas with those who matter somebody listened to Derek and we were provided with a wonderful day of reasonable temperatures, no wind and even some sunshine.

Ten valiant JAWS Golfers set out in 3 groups all having to use Winter Wheels with many carrying their clubs whilst others had to pull their trolleys. Unfortunately due to the earlier bad weather buggy’s were not allowed and so George was not able to play.

It turned out to be a good start to the year with one or two very impressive scores from John Jewson and Lee Chapman (which will duly have their handicaps reduced by Andy) and one or two rather disappointed with theirs (both claiming anonymity).

John won the trophy with an impressive 38 points and a blob, fantastic playing off a 13 handicap.

Phil Crookes won the Men’s Longest Drive and Mary Holmes the Ladies.

Nearest the Pin on the tricky 15th caused most players anquish. No Ladies managed to get on the Green and very few of the Men. From somewhere however Derek played his shot of the day and even managed a birdie to claim not just the prize but later the Wooden Spoon as well. Life has its ups and downs!

After some interesting nominations for the Squeaky Toy, Brian Letchford was pronounced winner having allowed the hole in his sock to be seen in the Men’s Changing Room. It was again observed after the game having grown in size. When challenged about this after the game he mentioned something about ‘Darning and Janet’ or was it ‘Darling and Janet’………………..anyway it was enough for him to be presented with this prestigious prize.

A profit of £19.00 is added to the kitty away from the grasp of Barrie!!!!
